GOLDMAN NAMED AMES
LAB
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY DIVISION DIRECTOR
Ames, IA – Ames Laboratory Director Tom Barton today announced
the appointment of Dr. Alan Goldman
as division director for Science and Technology at Ames Lab. Goldman’s
appointment is effective September
1, 2004. He replaces Dr. David Hoffman, who recently retired from
the position.
Goldman was chairman of
the Iowa State University Department of Physics and Astronomy
from 1999 to
2002 and also served as the interim director of Iowa State University’s
International Institute of Theoretical
and Applied Physics. Goldman began his career at ISU and Ames Laboratory
in 1988 as an ISU assistant
professor in Physics and an Ames Lab associate physicist. Currently,
he is a professor at ISU and a senior
physicist at the Ames Laboratory. Goldman received his bachelor’s
degree in 1979, his master’s degree in
1980 and his PhD. in 1984 from State University of New York at
Stony Brook. He was an associate scientist
at Brookhaven National Laboratory from 1984-1988. Goldman’s background is in X-ray- and neutron-scattering
techniques for the study of the structure and
dynamics of condensed matter. Research interests include magnetic
X-ray- scattering measurements of
magnetic phase transitions, the structure and disorder in icosahedral
phase alloys, and the interplay between
magnetism and superconductivity in superconductors. Goldman is
also credited for fostering Ames Lab’s
ongoing efforts in quasicrystal research. Since 1994, he has been
the director of the Midwest Universities
Collaborative Access Team, a group of scientists from eight universities
and one German institute. Under
his leadership, MUCAT set up an undulator beam line in the Advanced
Photon Source at Argonne National
Laboratory to study materials and their properties. Goldman is
the author of approximately160
publications. In his new position, Goldman will provide direction to Ames
Laboratory’s
program directors in new science
initiatives. In making the announcement, Barton said, “Alan
has the knowledge, skills and entrepreneurial
nature to help strengthen the Laboratory’s research activities
in a broad spectrum of scientific arenas.”
Ames Laboratory is
operated for the Department
of Energy by Iowa State
University. The Lab conducts research into various areas
of national concern, including energy resources, high-speed
computer design, environmental cleanup and restoration, and
the synthesis and study of new materials.
